Words per minute (WPM)

Definition

The number of words a speaker delivers in one minute. Conversational pace is 120–150 WPM; presentation pace is typically 130–160 WPM.

WPM is the simplest measure of speaking pace. Too slow (under 100) feels droning. Too fast (over 170) loses listeners. The sweet spot for most presentations is 130–150 WPM — fast enough to feel energetic, slow enough to be understood.

WPM varies by language, audience, and content density. A keynote with a global audience runs slower; a sales pitch to insiders runs faster. The right pace is the pace your audience can follow without effort.
